🏄 Sea-Doo & PWC Bill of Sale — What You Need to Know

Personal watercraft (PWC) — including Sea-Doo, Yamaha WaveRunner, and Kawasaki Jet Ski — are treated as vessels in most states and require the same title transfer process as a boat. A proper bill of sale is critical.

What to Include in a PWC Bill of Sale

  • Hull Identification Number (HIN) — the PWC's serial number, found on the rear starboard (right) side of the hull.
  • Make, model, and year (e.g., 2021 Sea-Doo Spark 2-Up)
  • Full legal names and addresses of buyer and seller
  • Sale price and date of sale
  • Trailer information (VIN, year, make) if sold together
  • "As-Is" disclaimer — unless a warranty is offered, state it explicitly
  • Signatures of both parties (notarization required in some states)

Title Transfer Steps for PWC

  1. Confirm the current owner's name matches the title exactly.
  2. Check for liens through your state's lien search tool (see state guides).
  3. Have the seller sign the title over on the back (assignment section).
  4. Complete the bill of sale — keep one copy each.
  5. Submit the title, bill of sale, and sales tax to your state DNR or DMV within the required window (usually 15–60 days).

Trailer tip: If the PWC trailer is included in the sale, it requires a separate title transfer through your state DMV — trailers are titled separately from watercraft in most states.

🏍️ ATVs, Side-by-Sides & Snowmobiles

Off-road vehicles have their own title ecosystem. Key points:

  • Titled in most states: ATVs, UTVs, and snowmobiles are titled like motorcycles in most states, but some states only issue registration certificates (no title).
  • Street-legal vs. off-road: A side-by-side converted to street-legal use may require a VIN inspection and separate DMV process.
  • VIN plate check: Always verify the VIN plate on the frame matches the title. Altered VINs are a major red flag.
  • Snowmobiles: Several northern states (MN, WI, MI, NY) have dedicated snowmobile registration systems separate from their general DMV.

Powersports Private-Sale Checklist

  1. 1

    Verify the title & VIN/HIN

Match the VIN or HIN on the unit to the title. Any discrepancy is a deal-breaker.

  2. 2

    Run a lien search

Use your state's lien search tool to confirm no bank has a security interest in the vehicle.

  3. 3

    Check NADA value

NADA Guides covers PWC, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles. Know the number before you negotiate.

  4. 4

    Inspect & test ride

For PWC: run it on water. For ATVs: ride it through terrain. For snowmobiles: check the track and clutch.

  5. 5

    Complete bill of sale

Include HIN/VIN, make, model, year, price, date, and both party signatures.

  6. 6

Transfer title within your state's window

Late title transfers often incur penalties. Most states require filing within 15–60 days of purchase.
